MerlinImage

Version 1.0.0 · Free beta

Breaks a flat image into editable layers with real transparency, and fills in the background behind each object.

  • AI decomposition in the cloud, about $0.05 an image
  • Free Quick mode that runs on your PC, with no upload
  • Box an object to lift it onto its own layer
  • Exports layered PSD, OpenRaster and PNG layers

Before you start: you'll need a fal.ai account

Full decomposition runs a large AI image model on fal.ai's servers, so you'll need your own fal.ai account and API key. It's pay as you go, about $0.05 per image, so even a busy month usually costs a few dollars, billed by fal.ai.

No account yet? Quick mode and Box to layer are free and run on your PC. The $39 MerlinImage license is separate and doesn't include cloud runs.

Got an idea for the next Merlin app?

Tell us about the tool you wish existed. Every Merlin app started as someone muttering "there has to be a better way" at their screen.

Fair warning: some ideas are a weekend project, and some would need a bigger wand than we own. We read every one either way, and if yours makes the cut, you'll be the first to know.

  • Doable: "A button that pastes my ticket template."
  • Ambitious: "Something that writes my change requests for me."
  • Too much: "Make Mondays optional."
